St. Pius X parishioners first visited Portillo, El Salvador, in 1996, shortly after the Peace Accords were signed. The country was rebuilding after a devastating civil war and the people from Portillo were trying to restore their community.
Through the years, SPX has helped the teachers finish high school and eventually college. They now are paid by the government. We helped the school get books, flush toilets (the teachers were so appreciative) and other supplies. Through other sources, a school building was built and eventually remodeled to have windows and good lighting. Now we are helping the high school and university students continue their education in other towns.
St. Pius sends $2000 a year in scholarships which is usually divided among 10 students studying at the high school or university level. There is only an elementary school in Portillo. We also send $200 for supplies. This does not pay for all of their education but it definitely helps the families. Many of the graduates have thanked us and said they could not have continued their education without our help. Any little bit helps and all of the money goes directly to the students. With so many graduates, we know the money is being put to good use.
We will be collecting through March 4th, but we'll never turn down donations any time of the year.
